On April 16, 2003, one of the greatest basketball stars of all time retired. Michael “Air” Jordan played his last game. His career ended in defeat: with the Washington Wizards he was defeated by the Philadelphia 76ers 87:107.
And yet it was a big moment for the then 40-year-old. Shortly after hitting his last free throw, Jordan left the court for the final time in his professional career with 1:44 minutes left in the game – to a standing ovation from the entire audience, including the coach and players of the opposing team.
With the Chicago Bulls, with whom he was under contract for a total of twelve years, Jordan won the NBA championship six times and was named “Most Valuable Player” (MVP) of the season five times.
