The Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner is in the semifinals of the Monte Carlo tournament after beating the Dane Holger Rune in the quarterfinals

The Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner is in the semifinals of the Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo, after beating the Dane Holger Rune (number 7 in the world ranking) in three sets in the quarterfinals, with a score of 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. The Masters 1000 are the most important tennis tournaments after the four Grand Slams, and the Monte Carlo one is played on clay. The match was very close: Sinner had come very close to winning it in two sets, but Rune had managed to cancel two match points (i.e. points which, if scored, would have made Sinner win) and then won the second set. In the third set, however, Sinner immediately scored the match point he earned, the third of the match. In the semi-final he will face the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, among the best in the world on clay.

Sinner is second in the men’s world tennis ranking, is in a particularly positive period and so far has clearly been the best tennis player of 2024. Since the beginning of the year he has already won three tournaments (out of four played): the Australian Open, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments, the Masters 1000 in Miami and the ATP 500 in Rotterdam. In the fourth tournament played so far, the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells, he was eliminated in the semi-final, beaten by the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, number 3 in the world. Sinner is also very competitive on clay, where Monte Carlo and the next tournaments are played more or less until the summer, but less so than on hard courts, where the three tournaments he won this year were played.
