Jannik Sinner is not considered one of the most likeable players on the ATP tour for nothing

Reigning Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner advanced to the third round of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Madrid with a victory over his compatriot and Davis Cup colleague Lorenzo Sonego. There wasn’t much to gain for his tournament buddy. In the end it was clearly 6:3, 6:0 for the likeable South Tyrolean.

In the press conference that followed, Sinner was asked whether the great successes of the recent past had changed him in any way. The 22-year-old seems certain that this is not the case. “I haven’t changed because of success. I don’t believe in such things because the way you are as a person is much more important than anything else.”

Made a lot of sacrifices for success

“I always try to surround myself with good people who give me something positive in return,” the Italian continued. “I dream big, I dream of winning as many titles as possible. I made a lot of sacrifices when I left home at 14 and that’s still on my mind.”

He still works every day to become a better player. Sinner really seems to be able to do that. The current world number two can demonstrate the visible success of his hard work again on Monday when he meets the Russian Pavel Kotov in the third round.

Here is the individual tableau in Madrid.
