1 in 100 Million: IOC Launches Campaign to Support Refugee Olympic Team for Paris 2024

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today launched the “1 in 100 Million” campaign to support the Refugee Olympic Team as they prepare for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

The aim is to shine a spotlight on the 36 inspiring athletes who have faced incredible challenges to reach their starting line, and calls on everyone to get behind the team as they represent the more than 100 million displaced people on sport’s biggest stage in the world.

The campaign kicks off with a graphic novel-style short film that introduces the formidable sporting talents and personal stories of the Refugee Olympic Team athletes, including Cindy Ngamba (boxing), Dorsa Yavarivafa (badminton) and Ramiro Mora ( weightlifting), and Refugee Athlete Scholarship holder Kavan Majidi (judo), while also drawing attention to the shocking scale of the global refugee crisis.

The film was made using advanced AI technology. An integral aspect of the film’s production was the involvement of collaborators from the refugee community, such as illustrator and author Engy Jarrouj, a refugee from Syria at creative studio Framestore. The film also features an original score produced by artists Che Lingo and Manon Dave.

Broader initiative

The film is part of a wider initiative that gives the team its own unique identity, with a nod to the design of the very first Refugee Olympic Team emblem – a unifying symbol that brings diverse athletes together. The emblem features arrow markers, representing the shared experience of their journeys, and a heart – taken from the Olympic Refuge Foundation (ORF) logo, to represent the solidarity the team hopes to inspire and that athletes and displaced people around the world have found through sports.

The Refugee Olympic Team was established by the IOC for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games to ensure that all athletes, regardless of their circumstances, have the opportunity to participate in the Olympic Games. Competing in the Olympic Games for the third time, the Refugee Olympic Team represents the more than 100 million displaced people around the world and aims to be a symbol of inclusion and inspiration for all those affected by displacement.

36 athletes

The Refugee Olympic Team for Paris 2024 was announced on May 2 and consists of 36 athletes, hosted by 15 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), participating in 12 sports: athletics, badminton, boxing, boxing, canoeing, cycling, judo, shooting, swimming, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling. The composition of the team is based on several criteria, including primarily the sporting achievements of each athlete and their refugee status in the host country, as verified by UNHCR, the UN refugee agency. Balanced representation of sport and gender and distribution across countries of origin have also been taken into account.
