The Denver Broncos: The Biggest Wild Card of the 2024 NFL Draft

As we enter the beginning days of April, the NFL Draft now sits less than a month away, generating a bit of added pressure for the Denver Broncos and their front office. The roster has several holes to fix before heading into the upcoming season, so the team has to start by hitting on their first-round selection taking place on the 25th.

However, with the immense number of holes to take care of, it creates an intriguing outlook of what this team could do at 12th overall. While quarterback is the elephant in the room, positions such as tight end and cornerback are well within play considering the circumstances.

As a result, when shuffling through the teams selecting in the first round, ESPN’s Field Yates believes the Broncos is the league’s biggest wild card heading into the NFL Draft later this month.

“Picking at No. 12 (for now), I’m struggling to get a grasp on what approach Denver will adopt if it stands pat,” Yates said. “Will the Broncos fill their most obvious need at quarterback even if there are few leftover options after teams in the top 10 pursue the top guys? Will they attempt to trade up to secure that quarterback? Of note, Denver is light on draft capital and doesn’t have a second-round pick, so a trade up the board would be difficult to execute. Or will the team eschew the QB spot — and if so, will it go “best player available” at a lesser need (i.e. Alabama CB Terrion Arnold or Georgia TEBrock Bowers)? It’s a hard team to figure out.”

With Sean Payton at the head of the operation, it’s difficult to predict what direction the Broncos end up taking at the end of the month. Had the board fallen differently and Denver possessed a higher pick, a quarterback does seem like it would be a likely selection. However, the high demand for a young signal-caller makes it difficult to picture a top option in the class falling in their lap.

A trade-up for a QB is well within play, as mentioned by Coach Payton earlier last month, but would inevitably take a pretty penny to facilitate. Instead, as Yates notes, the best player available may be the best course of action for a rebuilding Broncos squad to take on.

Expect to hear an abundance of rumors and speculations surrounding this fascinating team as we approach the final weeks of draft preparation.
