Alphonso Davies’ performances at FC Bayern this season do not meet the expectations of the player and the club. Lothar Matthäus has a reason for the form crisis.

Munich – After Alphonso Davies’ meteoric rise in recent years, the young Canadian’s strong career to date has suffered its first major setback this season. The 23-year-old has been struggling with fluctuations in form at FC Bayern for weeks.

Decent performances are sometimes followed by extremely weak games, like in Bayern’s 2-0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund – Davies, like many of his teammates, looked extremely weak and received that tz-Grade 5! Lothar Matthäus then finds clear words about the current Davies crisis.

Matthäus shoots against Davies: “Is a shadow of himself”

“Alphonso Davies is a shadow of himself, his head is not clear,” says the record international player and ex-Bayern star Bild against Davies. Against BVB, the Canadian played almost the full distance for the first time in a long time. He had previously suffered a strained inner ligament in February and then lost two teeth during his starting eleven comeback.

According to Matthäus, Davies’ poor performances are not due to his injuries, but rather to his environment at FC Bayern. “Players also need to be stroked sometimes, a friendly conversation needs to be had off the pitch,” explained Matthäus, referring to former coaches such as Hansi Flick, Jupp Heynckes and Ottmar Hitzfeld.

Davies is toying with a change

Accordingly, Davies lacks a reference person in the management team of the record champions who can rebuild him after poor performances and give him courage. That could also be one of the reasons why the defender has not yet extended his contract in Munich and is considering a move to Real Madrid.

The Bayern bosses around the new sports director Max Eberl would actually like to extend the contract with Davies beyond 2025, but recently there has been some excitement in contract poker. Eberl and Davies’ advisors engaged in a public feud over contract negotiations.

Eberl calls for a timely decision in Davies poker

First, the Munich Davies gave an ultimatum. “We made Alphonso a very concrete, appreciative offer. At some point in life you have to say yes or no,” said Eberl. Consultant Nick Huoseh then spoke of unfair treatment and also referred to the still unresolved coaching question in the coming season. Eberl, in turn, countered the consultant’s statements and renewed his demand for a timely decision.

For Matthäus, however, the difficult negotiations are only a small factor in the crisis: “The reasons for his personal crisis lie in the last few months, not just because of difficult conversations and negotiations with his advisor.”

Either way, Bayern are hoping that Davies’ performance will improve in the final stretch of the Bundesliga and in the Champions League in the next few weeks. If he stays, Davies could carry his good form into the new season – if a sale were to occur, strong performances would probably drive up the purchase price. His successor could come from BVB. (LuHa)
