The ADBA, looking to the future: these are the reflections of its captain

“We still have some hope of maintaining the category, because they want to readjust it, that’s why we want to continue fighting to be the best of the relegated ones.” After achieving promotion to the Women’s League Two just a year ago, ADBA’s adventure in the third category of national basketball comes to an end. The youth of their players and bad luck with injuries have condemned the Avilesinas, who, although they have games ahead of them, practically close the season.

“We lacked experience to close the games,” explains Lauri Martínez, team captain, who, despite her youth, is one of the team’s veterans. “We have made a great group despite the adversity,” says the Avilesina, who believes that this season has served as learning for the future. “Although we have lost many games, a team has been created,” she says.

And the ADBA season already started in a bad way, since its big signing of the summer, Cirkeline Rimdal, tore her Achilles tendon before starting the campaign. “We were a little disappointed. Claudia Alonso, the starting center, was also injured before the end of the year,” Martínez recalls. Despite this, according to him, “we compete every game, we have never felt inferior to our rivals.” The key to this decline is in the end of the games, since “we lacked experience to close the results.” “Our coach saw that what we were doing was working, especially in the first parts, but we didn’t know how to finish the games, and we lost,” he says.

Now, waiting to know which category they will compete in next season, it is time to look to the future. “Now we are going to continue training, not with the same intensity as now, but we will continue and start planning for next year,” says Martínez, who reveals that the club will soon begin to move in the transfers chapter, but without forgetting its entire youth team. The one who does not ensure his future is the captain herself. “I like the project a lot, but next year I have the TFG and I don’t know. If I leave it, it will mean that I have retired completely,” jokes the Avilesina, who hopes that this year will serve “to learn and become better players.”
