The 2024 NFL Draft: Quarterback Dominance in Round 1, High Offensive Linemen Picks, and Surprising Trends in Rounds 2 and 3

After a record six quarterbacks in the first 12 picks, no quarterback was selected between rounds 2 and 3 of the draft

The quarterbacks took over the first round, with six picks among the first 12 picks for the first time in the common draft era (since 1967).

On the second day of selections, they were forgotten.

After what Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, Michael Penix Jr., J.J. McCarthy y Bo Nix heard their names in shifts No. 1, 2, 3, 8, 10 and 12, respectively, no quarterback was called from the stage in Detroit, Michigan, where the 2024 NFL Draft is being held.

In fact, it is only the third time in the common draft era that no quarterback has been chosen in the 2nd or 3rd rounds, as previously happened in 1994 and 1983, the latter the only other draft in modern league history with six quarterbacks in the first round, according to data from ESPN Stats and Information.

Instead of the quarterbacks, the offensive tackles stole the show. According ESPN Stats and Informationthe 17 offensive tackles selected after three rounds this year are the most for any positional group this year, and the most for the position in the common draft era.

And, if we talk in general about offensive linemen, the 25 who have been chosen in the first 100 picks constitute the most in the common draft era, according to ESPN Stats and Information.

The runners say present

After no running backs were chosen in the first round, four found NFL homes on the second day of selections. Jonathon Brooks of Texas was the only one chosen in the second round, for the Carolina Panthers. In the third round, FSU’s Trey Benson went to the Arizona CardinalsBlake Corum of Michigan for Los Angeles Ramsand MarShawn Lloyd of USC for the Green Bay Packers.

Yale raises his hand

Offensive tackle Kiran Amegadjie of Yale was chosen by the Chicago Bears in the third round. That made the lineman the first FCS player to be drafted in the 2024 NFL Draft. All 74 players chosen before him played for FBS programs, the highest level of NCAA college football.

At the same time, Amegadjie became the first Yale player to be drafted in a round above the sixth since the Dallas Cowboys took linebacker Jeff Rohrer in 1982. Since then, the Bulldogs had only managed to place six players in the draft, two in the sixth round and four in the seventh.

The second round becomes defensive

Twenty defensive players were selected among the 32 picks in the second round, a radical shift in strategy for NFL teams after a first round leaning entirely toward the offensive side of the ball, including the first 14 overall picks. Only nine defenders were selected in the first round.

After three rounds, however, the offensive elements continue to dominate by a margin of 54 against 46 defensive elements, according to numbers from ESPN Stats and Information.

Michigan and Washington dominate at the moment

With Ann Arbor about a 45-minute drive from Detroit, where the 2024 NFL Draft is being held, it seems straight out of a script that the national champion Wolverines are one of the two programs that have contributed the most players to the 2024 Draft held in Detroit; the home team is weighing.

But, they are not alone. Washington, its rival in the most recent College Football Playoff Championship Game, also has seven recruits in the event.

After the Wolverines and Huskies, Alabama, Georgia and Florida State are the schools that have contributed the most new elements to the NFL in the first 100 steps of the 2024 NFL Draft, with six each.
