At the European Championships currently taking place in Saarbrücken, Switzerland can celebrate Tobias Künzi’s access to the round of 16. The Aargau native eliminated Estonian Karl Kert, despite a complicated start to the match which saw him trail 13-18 in the first set. Then he was able to score eight consecutive points, winning the first half, and continue the momentum until 9-2 in the second set, then won 21-11. «Finally managing to win the first set gave me great confidence», commented Künzi, who in the round of 16 will face the number 5 seed of the tournament, the Danish Rasmus Gemke. The Swiss therefore starts as an underdog on paper, but not beaten from the start, also because in the last two consecutive years he had come within one point of reaching the quarter-finals.
In the women’s field, last year’s bronze medalist Jenny Stadelmann lost to the French Rosy Oktavia Pancasari 21-10, 18-21, 9-21. The Swiss, returning from an injury, can complain about having wasted a 12-7 lead during the second set. Stadelmann still maintains a good chance of qualifying for the Olympic Games, but to be certain she will have to wait for the weekend’s results.
