Isabel Gose is in impressive form. She won four titles at the German championships. Three others are also in a class of their own.

Isabel Gose can start preparing for the Olympic Games in Paris in a relaxed manner. At the German Swimming Championships, the Magdeburg native won all four starts in Berlin in the 200, 400, 800 and 1500 meter freestyle and set several personal best times.

She should also start in all four competitions in Paris, but will forego the 200 meters due to the tight schedule. The nomination committee of the German Swimming Association (DSV) will decide how many German swimmers will be in Paris at its meeting next Thursday.

Like Gose, 100-meter butterfly world champion Angelina Köhler and Lukas Märtens also secured their Olympic tickets early at the World Championships. Köhler also won the 50 meter butterfly on Sunday, but missed the standard time as well as the 200 meter. Märtens, who broke Paul Biedermann’s world record from 2009 in the 400 meter freestyle on Thursday, confidently qualified for the Olympics on Sunday as champion in the 200 meter backstroke. He will also compete in the 200 meter freestyle and in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay in Paris.

Wellbrock back, record for Imoudu

Open water Olympic champion Florian Wellbrock, who missed the ticket in the 800 meter freestyle despite winning the championship title, held his own in the 1500 meter freestyle on Sunday and clearly distanced himself from his opponents. In the fight for second place on the grid in Paris, Sven Schwarz was able to fend off Oliver Klemet’s attack.

Marek Ulrich fought for second place in the 100 meter backstroke. In a specially scheduled individual start, a so-called time trial, he swam for 53.71 seconds and stayed three hundredths of a second below the standard time.

The only German record at the championships was achieved by Melvin Imoudu, who improved his own best time in the 50 meter breaststroke by 0.12 seconds to 26.62 seconds.
