The Greek tennis professional Stefanos Tsitsipas followed up his victory against Jannik Sinner and also won the final of the Masters 1000 tournament in Monte-Carlo on Sunday.

The 25-year-old beat Norwegian Casper Ruud 6-1, 6-4 in the final and celebrated his third title at the clay court event in the Principality after 2021 and 2022. On Saturday, Tsitsipas and Ruud each caused surprises in their semi-finals taken care of. Tsitsipas defeated Sinner 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in a dramatic match. Ruud won against 24-time Grand Slam tournament winner Novak Djokovic from Serbia 6:4, 1:6, 6:4.

“That was tennis at the highest level that I am capable of playing,” Tsitsipas said after his win against the South Tyrolean. The world number two had to receive medical treatment in the middle of the second set; he was clearly suffering from cramps and thigh problems. After the match, the man from Sexten gave the all-clear and was already looking forward with confidence.

Djokovic ended the match against Ruud with a double fault – perhaps the Norwegian’s prayers helped. “I prayed and thought: Let it be a double fault just once!” Ruud revealed afterwards: “Something or someone was listening up there.” But the Norwegian had no chance in the final. Not least because he missed eight break points.
