Spain and Italy in Negotiations with Chinese Car Manufacturer Chery for Production Expansion

The Spanish Ministry of Industry expressed confidence that the agreement to start production in Barcelona will be finalized in the coming days. The Catalan government said one of its senior trade officials would head to China on Wednesday to meet representatives of Chery.

The Reuters agency reported last month that the Italian government is also negotiating with the Chery company, which is now trying to attract another car manufacturer to its country. The only major car manufacturer in Italy is now the Stellantis group, whose brands include Fiat and Alfa Romeo.

Chery Auto does not yet have any production activities in Europe. In Spain, the company started selling cars this year, Reuters wrote. It is currently the third largest car manufacturer in China with 1,881,316 vehicles sold in 2023.

The Chinese car manufacturer XPeng is expanding its European operations, also heading to Germany
