South Tyrolean State Committee for Tennis Presents Championship Calendar

Bolzano – Last Thursday, the South Tyrolean State Committee for Tennis presented the championship calendar in the House of Sports in Bolzano. President Richard Weissensteiner, accompanied by board members Marion Kostner and Pietro Baruchello, presented the game plans to club representatives.

The board member of the national tennis association FITP, Roland Sandrin, took part as a guest and expert. Weissensteiner was delighted by the great interest: “The organization and execution is a truly mammoth program. Nadia Schuster does great work in the FITP office. Tennis is experiencing a real boom in South Tyrol in the wake of Jannik Sinner. We are approaching the 7,000 member mark. A few years ago there were 4,000 registered players.”

In the fourth category of Serie D, there are 112 men’s teams spread across 19 districts. For women there are 69 teams in twelve districts. The D3, D2 and D1 series also have high numbers of participants, which leads to well over 1,500 games in the lowest division in South Tyrol alone. This year there are eight men’s and six women’s teams in Serie C. There are also all the tournaments in the over categories. Over 60 national tournaments have been registered by the various clubs for this year. There is also a lot of activity and considerable growth in the youth sector. In order to counteract the shortage of teachers, Weissensteiner and Sandrin initiated a training course in Brixen, from which 18 new tennis teachers emerged. “We hope that at least ten trainers will work as trainers in the future in order to be able to cover some of the demand,” said Weissensteiner and Sandrin in unison.

Sandrin appealed to the clubs not to postpone game dates in order not to burden the busy calendar. However, appointments can be brought forward. Furthermore, organizers should limit the number of participants in tournaments, especially if only two places are available. He emphasized that it was irresponsible to allow players onto the pitch after midnight. This year, the national association is particularly supporting the tournaments in the fourth category with financial contributions and organizational facilitation for clubs organizing for the first time, explained the well-informed FITP official Sandrin. In addition, the leaders of the local state committee emphasized the growth of the new trend sport padel. Many new places have been created in Meran, Brixen, Val Gardena and other places in recent years and months. The tournaments there also attract many enthusiasts.

At the end, each club was presented with the new yearbook of the Tennis and Padel Sports Association. All data, groups and information about the upcoming season can be found there. The starting shot in Serie C will take place on April 21st. Things get really busy in the tennis month of May, when all teams start the hot phase.
