Skujiņas took 12th place in the one-day cycling race “La Fleche Wallonne”

Second with the same time was the Frenchman Kevin Vauquelin (“Arkea – B&B Hotels”), and the third with three seconds behind was the local Maxim van Gils (“Lotto Dstny”).

Skujiņš (“Lidl-Trek”) was 18 seconds behind the winner, taking 12th place in the competition of 174 drivers.

The Latvian reached 48 UCI world ranking points.

The Latvian Cycling Federation (LRF) reports that Skujiņš was in the lead of the race for a long time on the finish climb, where the athletes went four times in Wednesday’s competition.

There were two breakaways in the race, which were neutralized, the last of them – 14 kilometers before the finish.

Skujiņš was the only one of the “Lidl Trek” cyclists in the large leader group of 30 riders, and the man from Carnika went first on the finish hill.

LRF reports that the Latvian rider was in the lead for a large part of the climb, but on the steepest part of the hill, his competitors started to overtake him. Krista Neyland’s teammate Williams from the Israel Premier Tech team stood out with an impressive performance, gaining a large advantage that he managed to protect until the finish.

For the 27-year-old athlete, it is the biggest victory in one-day cycling races in his career.

“La Fleche Wallonne” for the first time in 1936. Last year, the Slovenian Tadej Pogačar celebrated the victory.
