Skier Ester Ledecka Receives European Union Trophy in Spain

Czech skier Ester Ledecka received the prestigious award, right on Spanish royal soil. The three-time Olympic champion received the 2022 European Union Trophy for the athlete who has most excelled in her field at the El Pardo Palace in Madrid on Thursday. Ledecká received this award from the hands of King Philip VI. and his wife Queen Letizia.

In Spain regularly since 1982 they grant National sports awards for the best athletes. In the past, such giants as Formula 1 pilot Fernando Alonso, tennis player Rafael Nadal or soccer player and coach Xavi Hernández have also been there. The awards in the men’s categories for 2022 were won by tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, and paratriathlete Susana Rodríguez reigned supreme among women.

And in the completely new category of the European Union Trophy, which was awarded for the first time in Spain, Ledecká was honored. The 29-year-old Czech winter amphibian stands out by dominating World Cup competitions on both snowboard and skis, which sets her apart from her competitors.

The Czech skier shone, for example, next to the King of Spain Philip VI. or Carlos Alcaraz’s world tennis triples. “It is a great honor for me to be able to receive this award as the first foreigner, from the hands of the King and Queen of Spain. In addition, I was with amazing athletes, led by Carlos Alcaraz, so I appreciate it very much,” said Ledecka.

Winners of a total of 14 categories were selected by a prestigious jury composed of representatives of the Spanish Olympic Committee, the Spanish Paralympic Committee, federations and representatives of the sports press and sports industry.
