Simona Halep is not taking part in Portugal due to knee problems.

Former world number one Simona Halep still has to wait for her first start on clay after her shortened doping ban. The Romanian announced on Instagram that she will not be competing in the WTA 125 tournament in Oeiras, Portugal next week as originally planned. The organizers planned a wildcard for the 32-year-old for the tournament.

Social media posts suggested she had been suffering from knee pain during training: “My body is telling me it needs more time to get used to full training again. “I don’t want to rush my comeback, so I won’t play in Oeiras next week,” said the two-time Grand Slam champion.

As her next attempt on the red clay, where she won the first of her two major titles with her triumph at the French Open in 2018, she is aiming to start at the Masters event in Madrid. A wildcard is also available for the returnee at the tournament hosted by her long-time manager Ion Tiriac.

At the Masters event in Miami, Halep played her first tournament after an 18-month break and was defeated in three sets by the Spaniard Paula Badosa in her opening match.
