Silent Strength: The World of Kata Judo in Reims

It’s a dive into a world where silence is only interrupted by impacts on the tatami mats. Kata is a variant of judo with a very different atmosphere from traditional confrontations in large halls. And for good reason: the two athletes facing each other are not adversaries but partners, and must reproduce judo figures in front of a jury which scores them.

During the European tournament which took place in Reims, this Saturday April 13, it was an opportunity for this discipline to make itself known. “These are pre-established choreographies, which are judged as we do in gym or skating”schematizes Jean-Marie Mahieu, leader of the kata working group at the Federation. “This is a rather new practice for us in Franceunderlines Magali Baton, general secretary of the FF Judo. We have put resources into place with a team dedicated to the practice of kata. We are not ahead even though we are among the three best nations in the world. »

The French shine in Reims

The results obtained at the René-Tys complex confirmed this good position: four French couples won the competition in their category, and others climbed onto the podiums on this day when more than 120 judokas from 15 countries were present.

The Blues also continued their stay in Reims with a regrouping at Creps over the following two days. “The French are doing well against nations who had brought their starters for the next European Championships, in June, in Sarajevonotes Marnais Laurent Péronne, national technical advisor. We also brought in kata specialists from the Champagne region so that they could benefit from the high level present in this competition. »

They could still return to Reims, which is applying to host a European or world championship in 2026.
