Astrup and Skaarup Dominate in European Badminton Championship Final, Claim Second Title

Astrup and Skaarup blow compatriots off the pitch in the EC final

The men’s doubles with Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup can call themselves European badminton champions for the second time in their careers.

On Sunday afternoon, the feather duo lived up to their favorite status in the EC final against compatriots Andreas Søndergaard and Jesper Toft in Saarbrücken.

Astrup and Skaarup won 21-16, 21-15 in just over half an hour of effort on the green floor.

The strong duo also won the European Championship back in 2018, but since then a Russian and a German pair respectively have taken European Championship gold.

The favorites quickly gained the upper hand in Sunday’s final, and by winning five duels in a row after the score was 4-4, Astrup and Skaarup created a comfortable gap.

In addition, Søndergaard and Toft began to discuss tactics and positions on the court, while Astrup and Skaarup scored several easy points and drove home the first set safely.

There were clear similarities between the two sets, because in the second set Astrup and Skaarup quickly built up a lead that their younger compatriots could not do anything about.

Midway through the set, Astrup and Skaarup led 11-4, and it was then changed to six match points. On the second of them, Kim Astrup smashed home the victory.
