Shota Imanaga Impresses in Major League Debut as Cubs Blank Rockies 5-0

CHICAGO — Shota Imanaga struck out nine batters in his major league debut Monday, helping the Chicago Cubs win 5-0 over the Colorado Rockies.

Working for six innings, the Japanese left-hander only gave up two singles – both in the sixth, after two outs. He did not allow a walk, throwing 92 shots.

The 30-year-old Imanaga (1-0) agreed to a four-year, $53 million pact in January.

Dakota Hudson (0-1) gave up three runs and four hits in five and a third innings.

In the sixth, two errors by left fielder Nolan Jones cost the Rockies three runs.

With one out and runners on first and second, Christopher Morel singled to left field.

The ball went under Morel’s glove and to the fence.

Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki went to the plate first, much to the delight of the 40,072 fans at Wrigley Field.

Jones’ throw to second baseman Brendan Rodgers then lacked precision, allowing Morel to score by sliding headfirst.

Jones also dropped a routine ball Sunday in Phoenix, a blunder that cost two points. Arizona won that game 5-1.

Cody Bellinger hit a two-run single for the Cubs, victorious in their last two games.
