Shaking Up Spanish Football: Political Scandals Rock the Federation and Threaten World Cup 2030 Bid

A real earthquake is currently affecting Spanish football. In recent months, the country has been mired in countless political scandals involving the federation. In these cases, two men are particularly singled out: Luis Rubiales and his interim president Pedro Rocha. Faced with these unprecedented affairs within the federation, the Spanish government had recently taken a radical decision, that of placing the RFEF under supervision. “The Spanish government has taken this decision to remedy the serious situation of the RFEF and allow it to begin a period of renewal in a climate of stability” had thus communicated on its site the Superior Sports Council (CSD), an organization dependent on the Ministry of Sports.

To make matters worse for this very heavy climate within the Spanish football body, the Spanish leaders have decided to reinforce Pedro Rocha as president of the RFEF. He was the main favorite even though he is the target of a serious corruption case. And this situation is starting to be very worrying in the country since it quickly caused UEFA and FIFA to react. “FIFA and UEFA are following the situation surrounding the RFEF closely and with great concern. FIFA and UEFA will seek additional information to assess the extent to which the CSD’s appointment of the so-called “Supervision, Standardization and Representation Commission” may affect the RFEF’s obligation to manage its affairs in a manner independent and free from inappropriate government interference”announced the two institutions in a joint press release.

The 2030 World Cup withdrawn?

The two major football authorities are indeed following this issue with great interest while the Spanish political world seems to have far too much power within the RFEF. And this can have very serious consequences. According to information from Brand, the possibility of sanction from FIFA and UEFA for political interference is no longer a simple hypothesis and is getting very close. In recent years, for the same reasons, Peru, Chad, Guatemala, Kenya, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe have been sanctioned with exclusion from international competitions. A few days ago, the Spanish Ministry of Sports received a letter from FIFA and UEFA asking to “quickly clarify the content of the Supervisory, Standardization and Representation Commission and its similarity to possible political interference”.

The two authorities believe that Rodríguez Uribes, President of the Superior Sports Council of Spain, has betrayed their agreement in recent months. And the sanctions are getting very close depending on Brand. The first could be to simply exclude La Roja from the next Euro that arrives. But worse still, and this is what the country fears, in its next congress in May, FIFA could take the decision to exclude Spain from the organization of the 2030 World Cup which would fall solely to Portugal and Morocco. Especially since the World Cup must be ratified next December. Spain is clearly trembling for its football. The threat has never been so concrete…
