Serge Ibaka Declares War on Competition After München’s Euroleague Exit

München

After the final exit from the Euroleague, Bavaria’s basketball star Serge Ibaka made a small declaration of war on the international competition. “That’s not it yet. We stay focused and will continue to work hard, like we always do,” said the 34-year-old on Friday evening after the 75:82 defeat against Panathinaikos Athens. The results on matchday 33 sealed the elimination of Munich, who, like Alba Berlin, will not take part in the play-in and playoff games.

The remaining final game on April 11th against top team AS Monaco no longer has any sporting value for the Munich team. Ibaka, who became NBA champion with the Toronto Raptors in 2019, praised the high quality in the Euroleague: “I always enjoy competing against the best. Then I play even more focused and aggressively. The Euroleague is a great competition. It was no easier than in the NBA, I had to work hard.”

The German Cup winner is in 15th place after 13 wins and 20 defeats. The performance is significantly worse than in 2020/21 and 2021/22, when Bayern made it into the playoffs. For world champion Niels Giffey, this is also due to a lack of consistency. “Consistency would certainly have been good for us throughout the season. Sometimes we didn’t have the ability to find a consistent style of play,” said Giffey.
