Elena Rybakina beat Ukrainian Kostyuk and won her eighth WTA title. At the awards ceremony you said: «I don’t know how to drive, but you are my next goal off the field»

In Stuttgart, Kazakh Elena Rybakina won her eighth title at WTA level, the third of a start to 2024 which saw her reach the final five times. The prize for the winner of the German tournament, however, was not only a cash prize of 123 thousand euros, but also a car offered by Porsche, the title sponsor of the tournament. Rybakina won it and got into it, but in the passenger seat. The reason? She had already revealed it yesterday, after the semi-final win against Iga Swiatek: “I don’t have a driving licence.”

The Stuttgart audience had a laugh; Rybakina, who also won the Italian Internationals last year, as well. But with a promise: «This is the objective to be achieved off the field in the shortest possible time». The final against the Ukrainian Kostyuk, won 6-2 6-2 in an hour and 9 minutes, had no history: the interview during the awards ceremony was almost more engaging, this too obviously focused on the curious case of the 24-year-old without driving license.

«We will certainly run the car, perhaps in Dubai – he says -. So Stefano (Vukov, the coach of the Russian-born player) will definitely be driving, maybe even my mother. But I hope to do it soon too.” In the meantime, Elena’s travel between the hotels and the fields will still be guaranteed by the tournament transport services.
