Riemer Calls for Simplification of Suspension System in Belgian Football: “It’s Too Complicated”

Brian Riemer (45) wanted to say something. After the fuss surrounding the (non-)suspension of Union defender Christian Burgess, the Danish coach of Anderlecht makes an appeal: “The suspension system is too complicated. They need to rethink it.” To then give a jab at the Brussels rival.

After a series of nine matches (8 losses, 1 draw) without a win against Union, Anderlecht hopes to finally break the spell. Although coach Brian Riemer is well aware that it will be difficult again, even if Union is not in its best form. “That we meet Union at a good time? Forget it. I don’t believe in that. There are no easy matches in the Champions’ Play-Offs.”

Perhaps Riemer, who gave a relaxed impression at his press conference, will put Mats Rits at the kick-off again. Keeping him out of the starting eleven proved to be no success against Club. “I’ve thought about it a lot. Look, one player can never decide an entire match. But Mats has already done well for us. I have the luxury of having four midfielders who perform at a high level: Stroeykens, Leoni, Delaney and Rits. I can already tell you: we are not going to play with the same three midfielders every match in these play-offs. It is up to me to find the best combination for each match, without mixing too much. Yes, that is the most difficult choice I have to make before a competition. (points to his head) But everything is here, in my head. I know how I want to handle it.”

Since Union is vulnerable at the back of the defense, wouldn’t it be a bad idea to drop Francis Amuzu into the starting line-up? “I have to protect Francis,” said Riemer. He has had a difficult and special year. On the one hand, he has shown his potential and qualities. On the other hand, there was that serious operation. I don’t want to force it. Francis will play an important role for us in the play-offs, but more as a super sub.”

Finally, Riemer shed light on the non-suspension of Christian Burgess. “Honestly? I don’t care. With my utmost respect for him and Union, but him being there doesn’t change anything for us. What I would like to say: many people in Belgium find it difficult to understand the suspension system, and especially how much can be appealed. They make it complicated and confusing. It is difficult to plan because there is uncertainty for so long. We have to see if there is no other way. In England you can appeal against one thing: the red card itself. You do not appeal against how many matchdays suspension you receive. Because then everything becomes blurry. You open certain doors that you want to keep closed. We are not doing ourselves any favors with this system. We need clear rules that everyone can follow. Honestly? Zeno Debast rightly got red against KV Kortrijk after he turned a ball with his hand on the goal line (on the seventh matchday, ed.). In any other country he would have been suspended for one match day afterwards, which just makes sense. But in the end he did not receive an effective suspension.”

Then he adds delicately – and with a touch of sarcasm -: “The only thing that makes me happy in this situation is… (regroups) Look, I hear that a lot of people are trying to cheat Union. That there were many decisions against them. Well, now there was someone who wanted to help them a little. That is positive.”

A jab at Union and Alexander Blessin – otherwise we can’t interpret it. The Union coach lashed out at the Referee Department last week and said that “people from the written press and on television would prefer Anderlecht to become champions”. A statement that Riemer had clearly also reached.
