Claude Génini, who was for almost fifty years a judo teacher at the Société des arts martial de Chatou (Yvelines), died at the age of 85, on Thursday April 4, 2024. A tribute will be paid to him, Thursday April 11, at 12:30 p.m., at the Mont-Valerien funeral home, in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine).

Since the announcement of the disappearance of this emblematic figure of the Catovian club, testimonies from its former members have flooded social networks.

For Inès de Marcillac, deputy mayor in charge of Sports, Claude Génini will remain a figure in Catovian sport.

“He is one of the founding fathers of the judo club. A charismatic teacher, he worked in the club until he was 80. His aura and his pedagogy are and will remain a model that his son Laurent perpetuates today. »

More than one hundred and twenty black belts trained

During his long career, Claude Génini trained more than one hundred and twenty black belts, and numerous teachers. He will also have obtained great results in competition and transmitted the values ​​of judo to thousands of students.

His son Laurent, also a teacher at the Chatou Martial Arts Society (Smac), remembers that it was in 1972 that his father joined the club created in 1965.

It was a friend who introduced him to judo. Claude Génini will move up the ranks very quickly until he obtains his black belt. It was a colleague at Général Food, where he worked, who told him about the Chatou club. The structure was looking for a teacher. He was active there until 2018 and his 80th birthday.

“As a teacher, he became technical director of the club, the usual continuation of the evolution of a teacher within a club. He enriched his activity by creating the gym-fitness section, and created and developed courses during the holidays. »

Claude Génini was officially a 2nd dan black belt, but his own teacher, Maître Pelletier, had awarded him the 5th dan distinction, in recognition by his peers of his exemplary work for the discipline.

“My father never wore this rank on his belt, out of respect for those who had obtained it through their work. He was a man of conviction and rigor in his work. He never wanted to be in the spotlight. »

Laurent Génini, 2nd dan black belt, has worked at the club for more than twenty years. If he does not consider himself to be his father’s successor, he continues to work within the club in his footsteps and in his footsteps.

A gymnasium in his name

A tribute will be paid to him by the City of Chatou. Eric Dumoulin, the mayor of the town, indicated that “in his honor and in his memory”, the municipality would propose “to name the Corbin gymnasium dojo in his name”.
