Remembering Bernd Hölzenbein: The 1974 World Champion’s Legacy

Hölzenbein played 420 Bundesliga games (160 goals) for Eintracht Frankfurt. In the 1974 World Cup final against the Netherlands (2-1), the attacker was in the starting line-up and took the penalty that led to 1-1 by Paul Breitner. In total, “Holz” played 40 international matches (five goals). This also included the 1976 European Championship final, where he scored the late equalizer to make it 2-2 against Czechoslovakia. However, the DFB team subsequently lost on penalties.

Hölzenbein also celebrated great success with the Frankfurt team. In 1974, 1975 and 1981 he won the DFB Cup with the Hessians, and in 1980 he won the UEFA Cup with Eintracht. In the German duel, Frankfurt won the second leg against Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-0, which was enough after the 2-3 defeat in the first leg at Bökelberg. Hölzenbein scored in Gladbach to give the team a 2-1 lead.
