Ralph Hasenhüttl’s Home Debut Ends in Defeat as VfL Wolfsburg Falls to Borussia Mönchengladbach

After his successful debut as the new head coach of the German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg a week ago, Ralph Hasenhüttl’s home premiere went wrong. The Lower Saxony team suffered a 3-1 defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach at the end of the 28th round on Sunday. TSG Hoffenheim had previously celebrated their tenth win of the season with a 3-1 win against FC Augsburg.

After the 2-0 win at Werder Bremen, Hasenhüttl’s first home game in Wolfsburg started as desired, Ridle Baku gave the hosts an early lead (7th). But the Gladbachers, with Maximilian Wöber and Stefan Lainer playing through, turned the game around after the break. Ko Itakura (52nd), Nathan Ngoumou (58th) and Rocco Reitz (88th) scored the guests to victory.

Borussia (31 points) improved to eleventh place. The Wolfsburg team (28), with Pavao Pervan guarding the goal and Patrick Wimmer storming for a good hour, are in 14th place – five points ahead of the relegation spot, which is held by Mainz.

In Sinsheim, Wout Weghorst (17th) and Andrej Kramaric (20th) brought Hoffenheim’s team led by ÖFB legionnaire Florian Grillitsch to victory with a double strike. Ermedin Demirovic (61′) managed to draw the line for FCA, but Ihlas Bebou made the final decision late on (90′). For Augsburg it was the first defeat since mid-February. In the table, Bayern (36) are tied on points, just ahead of Hoffenheim in seventh place, and are currently six points short of a place in the European Cup.
