Puerto Rico Aims to Surpass Tokyo 2020 Delegation at Paris 2024 Olympics

San Juan, April 17 (EFE).- Puerto Rico is getting closer to surpassing the delegation of 37 athletes that competed in Tokyo 2020 at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, waiting for some 80 athletes to still have the opportunity to qualify 100 days away. the opening ceremony in the French capital.

At the moment, some 23 Puerto Rican athletes have already obtained their ticket to Paris. The delegation is led by sprinter Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, Tokyo champion in the 100 meter hurdles, an achievement that the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee (Copur) hopes to emulate this coming summer.

“‘La Borinqueña’ is going to be repeated,” Copur president Sara Rosario said this Wednesday, referring to the anthem of Puerto Rico, in a presentation about the Puerto Rican delegation one hundred days before the Olympic Games, which will be held on December 26. July to August 11.

“We have a delegation with the opportunity to win more than one medal,” said Rosario.

Puerto Rico has won two gold, two silver and six bronze medals in the Olympic Games since its first participation in London 1948.

“There are one hundred days left. We can already see how the clock can exert pressure to make everything square,” Rosario acknowledged.

In addition to Camacho-Quinn, the rest of the Puerto Ricans who have already qualified for Paris are the fighters Sebastián Rivera, Darián Cruz, Ethan Ramos and Jonovan Smith, and the boxers Ashleyann Lozada and Juanma López de Jesús, the youngest athlete from the island -18 years old- who will go to the Olympic Games.

The remaining athletes are the sailer Pedro Fernández, the divers Macey Vieta and Emanuel Vázquez, the goalkeeper Alondra Rivera and the 12 members of the women’s basketball team, which is going to its second Olympic Games in a row.

However, this delegation could increase, since there are still 80 athletes in 14 disciplines to qualify.

These sports are athletics, 3×3 basketball, men’s basketball, boxing, canoeing, shotgun, golf, judo, wrestling, swimming, skateboarding, table tennis, shooting, archery, volleyball and beach volleyball.

The last qualifying event is the Basketball Pre-Olympic, whose one of the venues will be held at the Puerto Rico Coliseum, in San Juan, from July 2 to 7.

Puerto Rico will also have Enrique Rivera, who will run the marathon, but will not be part of the island delegation, since he qualified for Paris through a draw among runners worldwide.

Copur also presented a video of Sara from the Games Preparation Center in Dijon, where athletes will have the opportunity to adapt, adjust and acclimatize prior to their respective competitions.

The presentation of the flag bearers and the complete delegation will be on July 9, and the flag raising on July 12.

37 athletes participated in Tokyo, 24 women and 13 men.

The Puerto Rican delegation in Tokyo 2020 was led by its standard bearers, tennis players Adriana Díaz and her cousin Brian Afanador.
