Playing Ball: Hollywood’s Take on Baseball

Although it may be the national sport of the Americans, baseball does not convince everyone. Some find its pace too slow. Others find the rules too complicated. And there are those who deplore a lack of fireworks. But when Hollywood gets involved, baseball can be very entertaining!

Women can be passionate about baseball too. We appreciated their great enthusiasm with the film of the same title (starring Geena Davis, Madonna and Tom Hanks) in 1992. A freely inspired series was launched in the summer of 2022. It immerses spectators in the United States of 1940s, when women had their own league. However, as in every sport, there are many called, but few chosen. What makes it interesting and inspiring is that these women work hard to achieve their dream, one pitch and one at-bat at a time.

Competing against another woman for a man’s attention is one thing. Having to supplant a sports team is quite another! This is what Lindsey (the likeable Drew Barrymore) realizes when she falls in love with Ben (Jimmy Fallon who has a sense of comedy), because the man is a die-hard fan of the Boston Red Sox. If she didn’t know much about baseball before falling for a fervent fan, mademoiselle will discover that one can maintain a real obsession… In the production, the Farrelly brothers offer an interesting mix of humor and romance.

The number 42 in major league baseball forever belongs to the late Jackie Robinson. The former Brooklyn Dodgers player has left his mark on his sport like no other. On April 15, 1947, by playing his inaugural match with the American team, he became the first African-American to achieve this feat. Added to his aura is remarkable talent with impressive statistics and championships galore. All this while he had to deal with racism. In short, a real winner’s journey! To embody this legend, we chose Chadwick Boseman, known thanks to his character in the Black Panther.

More than 30 years after hitting 60 home runs in the same season, Babe Ruth had yet to see his record threatened. Then, there were two star players with the New York Yankees: Mickey Mantle (Thomas Jane) and Roger Maris (Barry Pepper). The year 1961 offered a healthy competition between two athletes who had every reason to believe in their abilities. Behind the camera, American Billy Crystal wanted to inject a good dose of reality into his return to the past. His bet paid off, as his work received 12 nominations for the Emmy Awards in 2001.

Here, the famous mouse’s studio entrusts the mound to a boy who, thanks to an ultra-powerful arm, makes his debut in the major leagues, within the Chicago Cubs. A 12-year-old teenager, Henry Rowengartner received a true gift from heaven after an arm injury. Stunned, he will become the darling of supporters who really needed a big star. A comedy with good feelings and assets to make you smile.
