Petro cancels the meeting of the binational cabinet with Ecuador after the assault on the Mexican embassy

The Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, announced this Monday the suspension of the next meeting of the binational cabinet with Ecuador, scheduled for this month, following the assault by police from that country on the Mexican embassy in Quito, on April 5, an event that he described as “serious.” “The bilateral cabinet with Ecuador that had been planned with President Lasso (sic) has been suspended,” Petro said in his X account.

Petro made the announcement when commenting on the news that the president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, said in an interview with the Australian channel SBS that He does not regret having ordered the assault on the embassy to arrest Jorge Glasformer vice president of Rafael Correa (2007-2017), to whom the Mexican Government had given asylum hours before.

Faced with this violation, the Government of the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, broke relations with Ecuador and denounced it before the International Court of Justice in The Hague considering that its sovereignty and also international law were violated.

“I think what happened at the Mexican embassy is very serious. Reconstructing international law is essential if we want peace in the world,” Petro added.

The suspended meeting of the binational cabinet, to discuss matters of interest to both parties, was scheduled for April 25 in the Colombian city of Ipiales, in the department of Nariño, bordering Ecuador. That meeting, the twelfth between the two governments, had been agreed on April 2, three days before the assault on the embassy, ​​in a meeting held in Bogotá by the Ecuadorian Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeld, with her Colombian counterpart, Luis Gilberto. Murillo. The Colombian Minister of Justice, Néstor Osuna, and the Secretary of Public Administration and Noboa’s Chief of Staff, Arturo Félix, also participated in this meeting.

The suspension of the binational cabinet meeting occurs on the eve of the closed-door meeting that the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) will hold tomorrow to discuss the violation of the Mexican embassy in Quito. This extraordinary meeting of Celac leaders, called by its pro tempore president, the Honduran Xiomara Castro, will be held virtually.
