Only one point from six games, slipping from eleventh place to 15th – and only a three-point buffer for the relegation place: On Monday, those responsible at VfL Bochum drew conclusions from the misery of the past few weeks; after an internal crisis discussion, coach Thomas Letsch was appointed and his assistant Jan Fießer were relieved of their duties.

As the kicker reported, they hoped to have found the right man in Peter Stöger to stop the slide towards the relegation zone. The almost 58-year-old Austrian, currently sports director at Admira Wacker Mödling, confirmed to the Austrian medium heute.at VfL expressed interest on Monday evening, but put a stop to any involvement in the district.

Great conversation with VfL officials

“You called me yesterday evening,” explained Stöger, who had already been on the sidelines at 1. FC Köln and Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga. “It was a great conversation. It would have been very interesting and exciting for me. I thought about taking the job to get myself back into the conversation.”

Nevertheless, he will not dare to take the step back to Germany for the time being. “In the end, the short-term nature was against it. Also because of the contract situation at Admira.” The native of Vienna only took up the position of sports director last summer; after leaving Dortmund, he was previously active as coach of Austria Vienna and Ferencvaros Budapest for the second time.

The search for a coach who will be on the bench against Heidenheim on Saturday (3:30 p.m., LIVE! on kicker) continues in Bochum.
