Patrick Mahomes continued the tradition of inviting Chiefs receivers and running backs to his home in Texas to begin offseason workouts.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Patrick Mahomes’ preparation for next season began as usual, hundreds of miles from Kansas City. Mahomes called the Chiefs receivers and running backs back for some throwing sessions near his offseason home near Dallas, Texas.

Mahomes said he believes football isn’t necessarily the most valuable part of training. Meeting some of the new players, such as wide receiver Marquise Brown and former rugby player Louis Rees-Zammit, is.

“What I find the most fun is building those relationships with the guys,” Mahomes said. “Every team is different…Bringing them here and seeing them outside the building, trying to do different things, taking them out to dinner, whatever, you get to know the guy and I think that’s what brings the team together. That’s something that I especially enjoy this part of the year.”

The Chiefs began their offseason program on Monday, but Mahomes and the participating skill players are still in Texas. Coach Andy Reid, in a nod to the length of the Chiefs’ season in recent years, kicked off the offseason program virtually with Zoom meetings.

“It gives the guys a little more time away from here, but at the same time they do some of their offseason evaluation work and a chance to move forward into next season,” Reid said. “On Zoom, you can do everything you need to do there with the video and/or new things you might want to include there.”

The program moves to Kansas City later in the spring. Until he does, Mahomes will continue to host training sessions. Neither Reid nor any member of his staff is present, so Mahomes acts as coach, at least outside of virtual meetings.

“I wouldn’t say it’s much different than being in the facility [en Kansas City]” he said. “I think only the guys listen to me because we do the workouts before the meetings, they listen to how I explain things, how I explain the routes, what I’m thinking, and then they come into the meeting room and listen to the coaches. and how they explain these things and how we combine them. I think it’s a good interaction with me to be able to explain my thought process, I think it gives the guys a good introduction. what the coaches are thinking and the coaches can really explain the details.”

Brown is the Chiefs’ biggest addition. He is two years removed from his best NFL season, when he caught 90 passes for more than 1,000 yards with the Baltimore Ravens. Brown spent the last two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.

The Chiefs haven’t had a wide receiver reach either of those marks since Tyreek Hill in 2021. Mahomes said Brown has a good chance of getting there.

“You can see the speed,” Mahomes said. “But I think what I’ve liked so far is how hard he’s working. He’s been in practice, he’s been running routes and he wants to keep trying harder and harder and I think he’s going to have a big role. In this offense, the way he “He can run routes, the way he can stretch the field, I think it’s going to be even different than what you’ve seen before because I think we could use him in different ways. He hasn’t been used yet.”
