NBA Player Jontay Porter Banned for Life for Betting Scandal

Found guilty of giving information to bettors on his own matches and those of his team, but also of having bet himself on NBA matches, Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter was banned for life from the NBA this Wednesday.

For several days, the interior of the Toronto Raptors (24 years old) was the subject of an investigation by the NBA, around irregularities concerning the ratings surrounding his performances during two matches, played on January 26 and March 20 . This Wednesday, the NBA announced that the investigation revealed that Porter “disclosed confidential information to sports bettors, limiting his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes and betting on NBA games.”

Porter disclosed confidential information

The League reveals that Porter had disclosed confidential information about his own health to an individual he knew to be an NBA bettor before a game against the Sacramento Kings on March 20 (89-123). Another individual who Porter also knew was an NBA bettor wagered $80,000 on an online sports betting site, with the chance of winning $1.1 million, betting that Porter would underperform in the meeting, the league said. Porter then played three minutes against Sacramento, saying he felt bad. But the unusual nature of this bet and the player’s actions led to the bet being frozen and not paid out.

From January to March, Porter also placed 13 bets on NBA games using his associate’s account. The stake for these bets ranged between $15 and $22,000, for a total of $54,094 wagered and net winnings of $21,965. None of the bets were on a match in which Porter participated.
