Patience is Key: Mats Wilander Hopes Rafael Nadal Will be Fit for French Open

Rafael Nadal still has to be patient for his comeback. Tennis legend Mats Wilander hopes that the Spaniard will be fit in time for the French Open.

“If he uses 80 percent of his abilities, I would like to see what he can do with the other boys,” Wilander told “Eurosport” with a view to the second Grand Slam tournament of the year.

Nadal last took part in a tournament at the beginning of January. The 37-year-old has been suffering from hip problems for many months. 2024 will most likely be his last season as a professional, as Nadal had already hinted at in 2023.

“Of course I would prefer if he didn’t end his career at all, but am I worried? Yes. But at the same time not, because he can train. He’s more relaxed in training than in games,” said Wilander, looking at the situation around the Spaniard.

The TV expert was convinced that the 22-time Grand Slam champion would not take any unnecessary risks. “What Rafael Nadal has done better than any other player in our sport is come back from injuries,” analyzed Wilander.

Tennis: Will Rafael Nadal be fit for the French Open?

Nadal recently canceled the ATP tournament in Monte Carlo. “Rafa has problems with his serve, otherwise he has no problems,” said his uncle Toni, according to “Marca”. The long-time tennis coach remained convinced that his nephew would come back.

At the same time, Toni Nadal emphasized the importance of hitting the clay court season before the French Open. “Either you go there 100 percent or better not take part. Playing any tournament in advance is important to have a good Roland Garros,” he said.

The second Grand Slam tournament of the year will take place in Paris from May 20th to June 9th. Nadal is by far the record winner here with 14 titles.
