ÖTV women are defeated in the BJK Cup Bulgaria

Austria’s tennis women lost their last duel in Group A against Bulgaria 1-2 at the Europe-Africa Zone I tournament in the Billie Jean King Cup in Oeiras. Julia Grabher, Austria’s number one, was unable to compete on Wednesday due to an injury. She was replaced by her Vorarlberg compatriot Tamira Paszek, who promptly won against Lia Karatanschewa 7:5 6:2. The doubles Paszek/Melanie Klaffner and Tamara Kostic lost their games.

According to ÖTV information, Grabher is not expected to have suffered a serious injury. When it hit, the 27-year-old took a wrong step and sprained her back. In order not to take any unnecessary risks, Grabher was withdrawn and Paszek was sent onto the court. Austria had already been confirmed as a newcomer.

Paszek is happy about the win

“I was actually really happy that I did so well in my first match on clay and was able to get the point for the team,” said Paszek. Kostic then lost to Isabella Schinikova 2:6 4:6, in the doubles the ÖTV pairing suffered a 7:6 (7/5) 1:6 6/10 defeat against Karatanschewa and Gergana Topalova.

Promotion was already certain

The ÖTV selection had already secured promotion to the play-offs, which will take place in the fall, on Tuesday with a 2-1 win against Hungary. At the start in Portugal there was also a 2-1 win against Denmark. Austria ultimately won the group ahead of the Danes.

In the remaining matches – first against Serbia on Friday – Austria is still aiming for points for the nation ranking. Paszek and Co. have no game on Thursday. “We enjoy the team spirit and will keep pushing,” promised the current number 337 in the WTA rankings.
