Olympia 2024: Badminton player Roth receives Paris ticket under reservation

Three German badminton players have certainly qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris, but the participation of German runner-up Fabian Roth is still subject to change.

This emerges from the world rankings published on Tuesday by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) in Kuala Lumpur. The five-time German champion Yvonne Li (SV Fun-Ball Dortelweil) will compete in the women’s singles, and the former European champions Mark Lamsfuß (TV Wipperfeld) and Marvin Seidel (1. BC Saarbrücken-Bischmisheim) will compete in the men’s doubles.

Roth (TV Refrath) also has an Olympic ticket in the men’s singles – but with reservations. The badminton players were able to collect points for the world rankings for a year; the ten best ratings are included.

The 28-year-old Roth could benefit from the temporary suspension of Ukrainian player Danylo Bosniuk in the qualification process. As the world association announced, Bosniuk is being investigated for match-fixing. He was dropped from the world rankings last week.

The world association announced a final qualifying ranking for Paris on May 10th. When asked, the German Badminton Association (DBV) said that they were waiting for this final ranking for Paris and were not commenting on the ongoing process.

For the world number 77. For Roth, Paris would be his first Olympic participation. In the internal duel, the 2017 German champion narrowly left Kai Schäfer (SV Fun-Ball Dortelweil) behind in the world rankings in 82nd place as of April 30th. Schäfer started for the DBV at the Summer Games in Tokyo (2021) and was eliminated in the group phase after two defeats.

Roth is currently playing for Germany at the World Team Championships in China, but came away empty-handed in his individual matches in the 4-1 defeat against Taiwan and the 5-0 defeat against Japan. The DBV team will finally face the Czech Republic on Wednesday, but they no longer have a chance of reaching the quarter-finals.
