Kahn sees two problems with Kimmich

Oliver Kahn praises Joshua Kimmich – but also sees two problems with the Bayern star’s appearance. The ex-titan also speaks plainly about a change in Munich.

Former Bayern boss Oliver Kahn praised Joshua Kimmich in detail – but also quietly criticized the midfielder of the German record champions. “I like Joshua as a guy. With his attitude and his leadership qualities, he is an important factor for every team,” said Kahn in an interview with Sport Bild.

Kimmich is currently mostly deployed as a right-back by coach Thomas Tuchel in Munich. “For me he is most valuable in midfield,” said Kahn. The former world-class goalkeeper explained this as follows: “He gets a lot of balls in the back third, distributes the balls and sets the rhythm. He also likes to get involved in attacks, plays strong passes and can score goals.”

Although Kahn is certainly convinced by Kimmich, he sees two problems. With regard to the ongoing issue of where Kimmich should be deployed, the former titan wants a clear edge from the leading player: “In the discussion about his position, I would sometimes have liked him to be more assertive, where exactly he sees himself.”

Kahn becomes clear in Bayern’s upheaval

In addition: Kahn also sees Kimmich’s game as a potential threat to the structure of the game: “In terms of playing style, he is both an eight-man and a six-man. This can sometimes lead to problems with the balance of the game.”

Kimmich’s contract expires in summer 2025. It is still unclear whether the 29-year-old will be extended or sold as part of a major upheaval in the current year.

“A change doesn’t happen with the snap of a finger,” said Kahn: “This is about players who have ongoing contracts and their ideas.” It is also questionable what is even possible on the transfer market. In addition, a change is always a “flowing, constant process”.

In general, he is completely convinced of the current Bayern team – for which he was largely responsible himself. Except for “Manchester City perhaps,” no team has a squad that is “stronger than that of FC Bayern.”
