Football: former coach Vicente del Bosque appointed head of the supervisory body of the Spanish federation

Winner of the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 at the head of the Spanish selection, Vicente del Bosque will head the supervision, standardization and representation commission of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). The former technician, now 73 years old, was appointed to this position by government spokesperson Pilar Alegria on Tuesday. This supervisory body was created last week by the Higher Sports Council, in reaction to the recent scandals that have marred the RFEF in the wake of the Luis Rubiales affair.

Del Bosque will have three major objectives, listed by the government spokesperson in a speech delivered at midday. “Represent Spanish football”, “ensure the transparency and proper functioning of the next electoral process in the Federation”, and “support the next events in Iberian football”, including the Euro and the Olympic Games this summer and, in the longer term, the candidacy with Portugal and Morocco for the organization of the 2030 World Cup. According to the Spanish press, UEFA and Fifa could sanction Spanish clubs and national teams if cases of political interference are proven .

This announcement came four days after the election as head of the RFEF of Pedro Rocha, despite being indicted for corruption. Initially interim after the withdrawal of Luis Rubiales in August, following his forced kiss addressed to player Jenni Hermoso, Rocha was elected during an election for which he was the only candidate. His mandate will come into play in September for a period of four years, until the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
