  • Novak Djokovic and coach Goran Ivanisevic are parting ways after six successful years. Together the two celebrated twelve major titles.
  • In an interview, Ivanisevic speaks in detail for the first time about the separation, for which there was no “one reason”. “One reason was actually the feeling of satiety and fatigue,” says Ivanisevic.
  • The Croatian denies an alleged argument with his long-time protégé.

Goran Ivanisevic has been part of Novak Djokovic’s coaching team since 2018, celebrated numerous successes and played a major role in the Serb being able to improve his serve again in recent years. The duo achieved a total of 12 Grand Slam triumphs together before Djokovic surprisingly announced their separation last week.

There is then a lot of speculation about the reasons for this. Ivanisevic himself also said in an interview with the Serbian broadcaster “Sport Klub” that he had read a lot about possible reasons for the exit. But no version is even remotely close to the truth.

According to Ivanisevic, there is no “one reason” for the separation. “But one cause was in fact the feeling of satiety and fatigue. “It was five really difficult and intense years,” admits the 52-year-old.

“Just like a car”

The Corona period in particular demands everything from the Djokovic team. “People forget that there was a phase during the pandemic when he was portrayed as the biggest villain on the planet because of his vaccination status,” said Ivanisevic. “We were always in a state of limbo – playing, not playing, preparing, then the changed regulations that banned us from entering and playing. And don’t forget Australia and all the chaos.” In 2022, Djokovic was refused entry to Melbourne because he did not have a valid visa.

The intensive years leave their mark. “Just like a car has to go to the workshop regularly to be put back into shape, I was just tired of him and he was getting tired of me. “I had the feeling that I couldn’t help him anymore,” says the 2001 Wimbledon winner.

Ivanisevic firmly denies an alleged argument with his long-time protégé and explains: “In America, when I spoke to Novak, he said something good: There is no right or wrong moment, there is only the moment when it happens, when two people meet “We all agree that it’s time.”
