New York Mets sign veteran starter Julio Teherán

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets, whose rotation was affected by injuries and the impact of weather conditions in this nascent season, have reached an agreement with veteran Colombian starter Julio Teherán.

The information was provided by a person close to the deal, who spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made.

Teheran, who became a bitter rival of the Mets when he pitched with Atlanta, spent the preseason with Baltimore. The right-hander terminated his minor league deal with the Orioles late last month when he failed to make the first-team roster for the season opener.

The 33-year-old Colombian, a two-time All-Star, returned to the Major Leagues last year after an extended absence. He went 3-5 with a 4.40 ERA in 11 starts and three relief appearances for NL Central champion Milwaukee.

David Stearns, the Mets’ new president of football operations, spent last season as an advisor to the Brewers’ owners. The previous fall, he had resigned as Milwaukee’s president of football operations.

Teheran has an 81-82 record and a 3.83 ERA in 12 seasons in the majors with the Braves, Angels, Tigers and Brewers. He was an All-Star with Atlanta in 2014 and 16.
