NBA Professional Banned for Life: Jontay Porter’s Betting Fraud Scandal

Basketball: Philadelphia play-off opponent of Hartenstein’s Knicks

Isaiah Hartenstein and the New York Knicks face Joel Embiid’s Philadelphia 76ers in the play-off round of 16 of the NBA professional basketball league. The Sixers narrowly won their play-in duel against last year’s finalists Miami Heat 105:104. Embiid, the league’s most valuable player last season, stood out for his team with 23 points and 15 rebounds. The series against the Knicks begins on Saturday (local time) in New York.

Embiid, who is not yet back in top shape after his knee operation, improved in the second half, as did the entire Sixers team, which was still 13 points behind at the start of the third quarter. Heat top star Jimmy Butler (19 points) injured his knee early in the game and was weakened as a result. Miami’s most successful thrower was Tyler Herro (25 points).

In the second game of the night, the Chicago Bulls defeated the Atlanta Hawks 131:116. Chicago around top scorer Coby White (42 points) is now playing in Miami for the last play-off ticket in the East. Whoever prevails here will face the Boston Celtics, the best team of the regular season, in the first play-off round.

Ice hockey: Draisaitl loses penultimate league game

Ice hockey star Leon Draisaitl and his Edmonton Oilers still have to work on their play-off form shortly before the end of the regular season in the NHL. In the penultimate game of the points round, the Canadians lost 2:5 at the Arizona Coyotes. Draisaitl remained without a scorer point.

The Oilers are in fifth place in the Western Conference and have already booked their ticket to the play-offs. In the last game before the championship round, Edmonton has to play against the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night.

Betting fraud: Basketball professional Porter banned for life

Basketball professional Jontay Porter of the Toronto Raptors has been banned for life by the NBA because he even bet on his own team’s games. The league was reacting to weeks of investigations against the 24-year-old, who, in addition to several violations of NBA rules, is accused of betting fraud. He is alleged to have disclosed confidential information, restricted his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes, and bet on NBA games.

“There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter’s blatant violations of our rules of the game will be met with the harshest possible punishment.” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, according to the statement.

Before the Raptors’ game against the Sacramento Kings, Porter allegedly gave confidential information about his status for the game to people he knew were betting on the NBA. As a result, one of the people is said to have bet $80,000 on poor performance by Porter – with an expected profit of $1.1 million. Porter only played three minutes in the game and then said he wasn’t feeling well. The bet was frozen and not paid out due to unusual betting behavior.

It also came to light that Porter, the brother of Michael Porter Jr. of the Denver Nuggets, placed bets on NBA games at least 13 times using someone else’s betting account. Betting amounts ranged from $15 to $22,000. Porter made a profit of $21,965 on the bets.

“You don’t want this for the kid, you don’t want this for our team and you don’t want this for our league,” Raptors president Masaj Ujiri said Wednesday just before the NBA decision was announced. “My first reaction was of course surprise. None of us and I think no one else saw this coming.” Later, the former team of Dennis Schröder, who played for Toronto until the beginning of February, released a statement and emphasized that they fully supported the NBA’s decision. “We are grateful for the quick resolution of this investigation. We will continue to cooperate with inquiries.”

Porter had a contract for the current season with permission to play in both the NBA and the development league, the G League. His salary was approximately $410,000. If he had gotten a regular NBA contract for the coming season, he would have earned at least $2 million. Porter averaged 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 26 games this season. He was on the starting line-up five times. He has not been used since March 20th.
