Jontay Porter was banned for life from the NBA for doing sports betsso he will not play basketball in the United States league again.
The NBA announced this measure this Wednesday through a press release, where it explains in detail all the investigation it had against the player who until today belonged to the Toronto Raptors.
Jontay was in his second season in the NBA. In 2021 he played 11 games with the Memphis Grizzlies. He spent the next two seasons in the G-League and returned to the league in late 2023 with Toronto, playing in 26 games before the suspension. Jontay, 24, is the brother of Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr.
The NBA detailed that Jontay Porter gave confidential information about his health status to a frequent bettor, associated with the player, to place a bet of 80 thousand dollars to win 1.1 million in a game on March 20. In that match, Porter claimed to feel poor health for only playing 3 minutes.
Jontay bet on 13 NBA games between January and March 2024, while traveling with the Raptors or Raptors 905 of the G-League, using an associate’s account. The bet amount was $54,094 and he had a profit of $21,965 in games in which Porter was not involved, he lost three parlays in which he included Toronto losing.
