NBA All-Star Snubs: Players Who Narrowly Missed the Cut – A Closer Look

Before we get started, one more note. For the first time, the teams are being formed without position constraints, so there could have been five forwards in the first team.

And now a few players who narrowly missed the cut. These are the following gentlemen in alphabetical order:

  • Jaylen Brown (Boston Celtics)
  • Anthony Davis (Los Angeles Lakers)
  • De’Aaron Fox (Sacramento Kings)
  • Damian Lillard (Milwaukee Bucks)

A few quick thoughts: Lillard had good moments in the first half of the season, especially in crunch time, and the Bucks are extremely dependent on his presence (+12.5 on/off net rating). Compared to previous years, his numbers are simply too weak (only 59 percent true shooting) to be considered one of the best 15 players in the league.

It’s a similar story with De’Aaron Fox, who is no longer the crunch time maestro of last year, goes to the basket less often and in return takes more threes. The success rate here is now only 36.5 percent, which is simply not enough. And if you still miss Domantas Sabonis: The Lithuanian remains a double-double machine, but is simply not a go-to guy. The Kings are -5.9 when Sabonis plays and Fox is on the bench, largely due to a disastrous defensive rating of 120, which Sabonis has no small part in.
