National football team: Julian Nagelsmann will remain national coach until 2026

Julian Nagelsmann will remain national coach beyond the home European Championships in the summer. The 36-year-old has agreed to a contract extension until after the end of the World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada in 2026. The association announced that the DFB’s supervisory board and shareholders’ meeting had decided on the extension.

“This is a decision of the heart,” said Nagelsmann about the decision. Being able to train with the national team and work with the best players in the country is a great honor. As part of his new position, the focus is initially on playing a successful home European Championship. “After that, I and my coaching team are really looking forward to the challenge of a World Cup,” said Nagelsmann.

There had recently been speculation about Nagelsmann returning to FC Bayern Munich. However, with his contract as national coach, he will not return to the record champions for the time being. There he was considered a candidate to succeed Thomas Tuchel, with whom Bayern ended their collaboration early at the end of the season.

Continuity again at the top of the national team

Having won Nagelsmann for the DFB is a “signal for the DFB and the national team,” said DFB President Bernd Neuendorf. “Because he is on the wish list of many big clubs across Europe.” The national team now has “planning security and everyone can concentrate entirely on a successful performance at the European Championships,” said Neuendorf.

The DFB leadership has managed to establish continuity in the leadership of the national team in a short space of time. Eleven days ago, the association also extended the contract with national team director Rudi Völler until after the 2026 World Cup. The 64-year-old played a key role in guiding Nagelsmann to the DFB last September.

He was also pleased with the decision: “We were already absolutely convinced of Julian Nagelsmann before the recent successful international matches. But they have shown once again what enthusiasm Julian and his team can rekindle in Germany,” he said. Nagelsmann is an outstanding trainer – a “tactical fox”. With his passion he could “infect and inspire every player,” said Völler.

Nagelsmann has been national coach since September 2023. He succeeded Hansi Flick. After winning international matches in March, the DFB bosses confirmed their goal of a longer collaboration with Nagelsmann. The national team won against France (2:0) and the Netherlands (2:1).

In the European Championship, the DFB team’s group opponents are Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland. Nagelsmann will start his preparations for the European Championship on May 26th with a training camp in Weimarer Land.
