If there is a sport that Mexico can trust, it is archery. Since 2000, the country has polished the arrowheads of its athletes to be among the small group of countries that dominates the discipline. The Mexican archers Aída Román, Alejandra Valencia and Ángela Ruiz won a gold medal this Monday at the Central American Games. The trident of Caleb Urbina, Carlos Rojas and Matías Grande also took first place as a team in recurve archery.
The Mexican trio was made up of three different generations of archers. Aída Román, 35 years old, was the first athlete from her country to win an Olympic medal in the Olympic Games. Born in Mexico City, she won the silver medal in London 2012. Before, she had already shone at the 2010 Central American Games when she won seven gold medals. Alejandra Valencia, 28, had triumphed in the 2011 and 2019 Pan American Games with team and individual medals. In the last Olympics, in Tokyo, Valencia and Luis Álvarez won bronze, one of the four medals that Mexico won.
The last element of the Mexican team does not have an INE credential. Ángela Ruiz, 16 years old, is the Mexican promise with the bow. The pride of Coahuila aspires to be among the athletes who will compete in the Paris Olympic Games. The young woman, along with Román and Valencia, dazzled the archery world by winning the World Cup in Turkey last April.
In San Salvador, the Mexicans swept the Colombian team of Valentina Contreras, Ana María Rendón and Maira Sepúlveda. The Mexicans hit the arrows better to obtain a higher score (162 compared to 150). This gold contributes to the good Mexican harvest of more than 210 medals in the Central American Games, where at least 89 have been gold.
