There is a Quebec athlete who really left an impression on me, but who made certain blunders after her sporting career. I’m talking here about Myriam Bédard in biathlon at the Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer. Let’s put aside her post-career and think of the little girl from Loretteville who collected two gold medals at these Games. What pride we had.

It’s February 20, 2014, the Olympic Games are drawing to a close in Sochi and I’m lucky enough to have an evening off from my role as in-house announcer for the short track speed skating competitions. I’m planning to go to Canada House to watch the long-awaited women’s hockey final between Canada and the United States. There I meet Charles Hamelin’s mother, Manon, and her partner who have two tickets for this final, but quickly, Manon offers me her ticket so that I can accompany her partner to the meeting. Difficult proposition to refuse! Crazy atmosphere, around 50% Canadian fans and the other half American fans, we never thought we would be in Russia. A game well controlled by the Americans who were heading towards victory when we saw, in the last minute of the match, the puck moving slowly towards the empty Canadian net right in front of us… The disc ultimately not only did not enter the goal, but instead found himself in the American net a few seconds later. The reaction of the crowd in our Canadian section would only be surpassed a few minutes later during the winning goal which I was lucky enough to film from my seat. We all had the feeling, from a small corner of Russia, of having witnessed an anthological moment, which is still confirmed 10 years later.
