Maximilian Marterer Falls in First Round, Yannick Hanfmann Advances: ATP Munich Update

As of: April 16, 2024 8:06 p.m

Maximilian Marterer had to admit defeat in the first round of the ATP tennis tournament in Munich. Yannick Hanfmann, on the other hand, had reason to be happy.

From a German perspective, it was a mixed second day at the ATP tennis tournament in Munich. Yannik Hanfmann can be happy about his progress. The German defeated Alexander Shevchenko 6:7, 6:3, 7:5 and moved into the second round. With the win against the number eight seeded Kazakhs, Hanfmann moved into the second round for the fifth time in his fifth participation in Munich.

The Franconian Maximilian Marterer also caused amazement on the second day of the ATP tennis tournament in Munich. In a long and tough game, the man from Nuremberg was able to keep up with the clear favorite Felix Auger-Aliassime from Canada, but in the end he still lost. After more than three and a half hours at eye level, Marterer gave away his place in the second round in the last few meters (7:6 (5), 6:7 (6), 7:6 (3)).

Marterer: “It hurts a lot at the moment”

Marterer started the game well. The 28-year-old won the first set, Auger-Aliassime the second set, and the rollercoaster ride continued in the third. First the Franconian grabbed the break, then Auger-Aliassime caught up again with a re-break. Only after 3:14 hours did the Nuremberg man get his first match point, which Auger-Aliassime fended off and fought for his own match point a little later.

“It hurts a lot at the moment,” said the visibly disappointed Marterer after the match. “Those were close things, I had the feeling that I was the more active in the third set.”

Koepfer also out of the tournament

Previously, the German Davis Cup player Dominik Koepfer was eliminated by the Chilean Cristian Garin 6:7 (3), 3:6. The 29-year-old from the Black Forest suffered his third first-round defeat in his third clay court tournament this year.

As on the previous day, the games on Tuesday were also influenced by the weather: After there were long breaks on the opening day due to heavy rain, it was the wind that caused problems for the players on Tuesday. Gusts of wind, sheets blown over and leaves flying through the air.
