Matthias Sammer’s Possible New Role at Borussia Dortmund: From Consultant to Super Advisor?

Matthias Sammer has been available to Borussia Dortmund as a consultant for a long time. The ex-national player’s job could change from next season.

On Tuesday evening Matthias Sammer was a TV expert for Prime Video in action during the quarter-final second leg of the Champions League between Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid. And before the game, the 1997 Champions League winner did not rule out greater involvement with BVB.

“We’ll see what happens. The club has certain considerations,” said Sammer on Tuesday when asked whether he would become a kind of super advisor at BVB in the new season. However, the 56-year-old also added: “I said that I would never again be operational and work 24 hours a day, seven days a day.” But he could definitely imagine new tasks with the Black and Yellows: “But if you need help, I have signaled a certain willingness.”

But nothing has been decided yet. So far, Sammer’s activity seemed to be linked to the term of office of BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke, but recently there were rumors that Sammer could stay at BVB regardless. Watzke will hand over overall sporting responsibility on June 30th and has already announced that he will not be extending his contract as managing director, which expires in autumn 2025.

As a player with BVB, Sammer became German champion twice (1995, 1996), and in 1997 he triumphed in the Champions League with a 3-1 win in Munich against Juventus Turin. He also started his coaching career at BVB and was head coach of the Black and Yellows from 2000 to 2004.

After a year at VfB Stuttgart (2004/05), he gave up his coaching career and initially became a sports manager at the DFB. From 2012 to 2016 he held the position of sports director at Bayern Munich. However, after a health setback, he asked for the employment relationship to be terminated and announced that he no longer wanted to be involved in operational football business.
