It appears that AC Milan will continue without coach Stefano Pioli after the current season. The coach has a contract in Italy until mid-2025, but Fabrizio Romano, among others, reports that Milan will say goodbye to Pioli at the end of the current year. According to Tuttosport, a Dutchman is in the picture as his successor.

“AC Milan’s plan is clear: the expectation is that Stefano Pioli will be fired at the end of the season,” Romano wrote on X. “The formal steps towards dismissing the manager will be taken in the coming weeks.”

This ends an employment relationship of almost five seasons. Pioli was appointed in October 2019 as the replacement for Marco Giampaolo, who had only been in charge of Milan for seven games. Before that, club icon Gennaro Gattuso was the head coach.

Under Pioli’s leadership, Milan won one prize. In the 2021/22 season, the Rossoneri became national champions for the first time in eleven years.

Milan will most likely end the current season as number two in Serie A. Leader Inter has a wide lead and can secure the championship in the coming round, while number three Juventus is five points behind, despite having played one match more then Milan.

Successor

The rumor mill regarding Pioli’s succession is already running at full speed. Lille OSC coach Paulo Fonseca and the transfer-free Julen Lopetegui have been linked to Milan for some time now.

Tuttosport now adds the name of a Dutchman. Mark van Bommel, former Milan player and current coach of Royal Antwerp, would be nominated to take over from Pioli. The former midfielder still has a contract in Belgium until mid-2025.
