Bow and Arrow Event ‘Arco al Parco’ at Terramara di Montale Archaeological Park on May 5th

“Arco al Parco” is the event scheduled for Sunday 5 May at the Terramara di Montale archaeological park which, together with guided tours, offers an in-depth study of the bow, one of the oldest weapons used by man, and shooting tests for big and small. Like every first Sunday of the month, entry to the Park will be free.

The bow appeared about ten thousand years ago and due to its effectiveness it was one of the main weapons used in hunting and war until the appearance of firearms. In the Montale excavations, some fragments of maple wood were found, probably referring to bows, the use of which is also demonstrated in terramare by the discovery of numerous arrowheads made of deer horn, bronze or flint.

On Sunday 5 May, supported by the archaeologist Monia Barbieri, of the Park staff, the expert builder of ancient arts Marco Bonini will create some for the public starting from different types of wood and using blades and tools reproduced in bronze. The presentation of the research on bows and arrows from the Bronze Age will end with archery tests open to everyone (from 6 years old) thanks to the archers of the San Galgano cultural association of Formigine.

Like every first Sunday of the month, entry is free and includes a guided tour of the excavation area where the terramara of Montale came to light, the Bronze Age village inhabited between approximately 1600 and 1250 BC, and the reconstruction in full scale of two of the houses discovered, with furnishings, weapons, tools and objects of daily use. The visit is now enriched by a new sound experience inside the two houses to discover what noise a terramara makes.

The Montale archaeological park is located on Via Vandelli (state road 12-Nuova Estense) and is open on Sundays and public holidays. The visits are guided, departing every 45 minutes from 9.30am to 1.30pm and from 2.30pm to 7pm (last admissions 11.45am and 5.30pm). Reservation is not mandatory, you can participate until all available places are available (around 50 people per shift). Anyone who still wishes to book can do so by calling the numbers 335 8136948 (from 9am to 1pm from Monday to Friday) and 059 532020 (during the Park’s opening hours), or by writing to [email protected]. The spring season continues until June 9th.
