Mark Daigneault Takes Home NBA Coach of the Year Award

It wasn’t the end of season award that left the most suspense. It is indeed Mark Daigneault of the Oklahoma City Thunder who leaves with the Red Auerbach Trophy. For his fourth year at the head of an NBA franchise, the young Thunder coach took OKC to the first seed in the West, despite his team’s average age of 23.

Only ten votes for the title of Coach of the Year escaped Mark Daigneault, votes to be taken lightly because a madman still gave a vote for the podium to JB Bickerstaff. Mark Daigneault is the first Thunder coach to obtain this title since Scott Brooks in 2010. This Thunder team is quite simply the youngest to capture the first spot in a conference since… the establishment of conferences in 1971. First participation in the Playoffs in four seasons, 17 additional victories compared to last year and a really exciting attack to watch evolve, around a 25-year-old Canadian, a sophomore and a rookie. My friend Mark had everything in hand to recover this title of Coach of the Year which is rightfully his. What a great story for the coach who started in the G League.

This fourth end-of-season award is the first for which the voting score is absolutely not close. Jamahl Mosley of the Magic then Chris Finch of the Wolves complete the COY award podium. Next came Joe Mazzulla and Tom Thibodeau who also received several votes for first place. Daigneault’s Thunder will continue its merry way in the post-season. With the Pels probably ruled out, it will be the winner of the Clippers – Mavericks series who will then stand in the way of Marko’s youngsters. And that’s all they’re waiting for, the little thunderbolts. They will go to war if their coach asks them to, and by wearing a t-shirt bearing his image, it wouldn’t be funny otherwise.

Mark Daigneault Coach of the Year, it’s done. At the same time, who else were you planning to give it to? Rewarding another coach would have been illogical, just like using five letters to reproduce the sound of a single vowel is.
